JACKSON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The Jackson Township community is mourning the tragic loss of John McDowell, 47, who was fatally shot by Pennsylvania State Police troopers at his home on Gable Drive on Thursday, January 29, 2026.
According to authorities, troopers arrived at the residence around 6:00 a.m. to serve a search warrant related to an investigation into alleged possession of child sexual abuse material. Officials reported that McDowell confronted officers upon their entry, which led to the deployment of firearms. He was pronounced dead at the scene around 9:20 a.m. No law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident.
The Lebanon County Coroner’s Office performed an autopsy, and the final cause and manner of death will be determined once the autopsy and police reports are completed. Troopers involved have been placed on administrative duty while a joint investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police and the Office of Attorney General continues. Authorities confirmed that the situation is contained and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
